Hello Michael

A pleasant surprise to hear from you.  It had me going back into
long-forgotten corners of my memory, especially about the chair.  Are you at
U Malaya permanently or just as a visitor?

Anyway, I wouldn¹t change too much about that article, no.  Main issue was
that it has too much edited out of it, as usual with HBR, to sex it up.  I
attach the MS version of a chapter from my subsequent book, The Mirage of
Global Markets, which is a rather fuller treatment.  Main issue is confusion
between a distributor and a marketing unit, or in other words between
operating knowledge (territory-related) and marketing knowledge
(product-market related).  Hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any
questions.

Sorry not to reply before your class; it was a Bank Holiday yesterday and I
was lazing around with the family.

All the best,

David
