The above is largely true when you are fortunate enough to
be evaluated by a technically competent PE (to use the same
terminology) who can evaluate your research performance.
However, keep in mind that the problem of matching the
appropriate PE to each applicant in a big company is itself
a difficult problem. So the applicant may have to start by
being evaluated by a recruiter. They tend to want to see
GPA numbers, just because it's usually standard item to enter
in a big company's evaluation form.
Another downside (for which your options do not offer a
solution) is that if you are still looking for a PhD advisor,
he/she may legitimately ask what your GPA is, including from
your previous degree programs.
